Think of the NODE ICON as a regular NODE on steroids. It shares a lot of the same features but adds some upgrades that make it a solid step up. Let’s start with the construction—the ICON is built with a premium aluminum chassis and a 5” screen, so it’s something you’ll actually want to have out in your garage or on your desk instead of tucking it away.
The audio quality is another big upgrade. It’s equipped with dual-mono ESS SABRE ES9039Q2M DACs, which basically means it delivers super clean and detailed sound. They’ve also added Dirac calibration, so you can fine-tune the audio to fit your specific space.
For connections, the ICON includes balanced XLR outputs in addition to the usual options, which is great if you’re running a high-end setup, like the Core 5’s I'm running. It even supports DSD256 files, so if you’re into high-resolution music, you’re covered.
One other cool feature is the Remote system on the back; there are two headphone-looking jacks on the back. Basically, you can control this and any other home theater device with one remote. I don't think most people will use that in the garage, but it is cool that it's included.
Overall, the NODE ICON takes everything great about the NODE and levels it up—better design, better sound, and more flexibility for different setups.
