I’m getting super excited about where we’re headed with all of this audio stuff. We’ve already built out a ton of sick audio solutions for the garage that will make your life a lot easier when setting things up. I also ensured every package/solution could be used in a home audio or office setup. Okay, let’s jumped into these SVS subs that have me pumped.
Nothing brings a set of bookshelf speakers or monitors to life than a subwoofer. In the garage, we’re going for a 2.1 speaker experience. This setup uses one speaker for the left channel, one for the right channel, and a single subwoofer channel - that’s all we really need for this space unless you want to get crazy and add in some ceiling speakers, but I don’t find that to be necessary.
The Dynaudio subwoofers we offer are pricey, so having a lower-cost subwoofer option made sense to me. I’ve always liked the SVS stuff, especially their subwoofers.
I did an in-depth review of the SB-1000, SB-2000, and SB-3000 - be sure to check those videos out for a complete, old-school Matty-like schooling on subs. It took me back to my Sound Advice days.
SB (Sealed Box) Series Subwoofers
These sealed subwoofers will have a tighter precise bass response. Think punchy bass instead of room-filling bass. Most sealed subs will have some directionality, so you will hear where specific lower frequencies are coming from in most rooms. The SB series subs are perfect if you listen to heavy metal, string instrumentals, or fast, hard-driving music.
The SVS app connectivity with Android or Apple devices is perfection. You can adjust settings from your phone instead of getting up and reaching in the back of the subs to make adjustments. I like this feature; it sets the SVS subwoofers apart from competitors.
Style
I love the look of the SVS subs - they’re clean and compact. The curved edges are a very attractive feature on all SVS subs. I’d highly suggest you don’t get the shiny, piano black finish if you are keen to regularly wipe and dust things off. Do yourself a favor and get the black ash finish; with all the dust and crap floating around in the garage, you’ll be better off with this veneer finish.
Performance
This thing will shake things up in your garage, plain and simple. Be ready for it. The small sealed MDF enclosure is perfect, and with a small footprint, it can be placed anywhere paired with the SVS wireless controller. This sub matches well with most speakers. The speed is good and very controlled; if you are listening to music with a kick drum, this sub can replicate drum impacts almost precisely, resulting in a pleasant surprise. The tonality is also excellent if you are an avid jazz or classical music listener. You will love the proper weight pronounced on bass instruments with the SB-2000.
Bass is a crucial part of the music listening experience, and the SB-2000 delivers accurate weight and presence to the lower frequency range. This small sub punches well above its weight but manages the rare talent of remaining detailed and controlled.
Final Thoughts
This sub only has one job to do, and it does it well. If you like a lot of rock music or instrumental music, or you’re a critical listener who wants a quick and controlled sub with precise tone and easy compatibility with a wide variety of speakers, this is the one to get. If you are looking at this for a home theater, get a second one to help fill the room.
There is really nothing about the SB series that I didn't like. So if you are looking for a subwoofer with a small footprint but plenty of muscle behind it, the SB series subs should be on your shortlist, and if you have a big space, go big(ger).
